Leader board totals are calculated based on the following data and assumptions outlined below.

Calculations:

"Total Pledges" is the number of unique users (by qualified university email address), who have submitted pledges through Power Down for the Planet.

"Energy Savings" is arrived at based on the assumptions of electricity savings resulting from use of power management features and choice of energy-efficient hardware, which is the basis of the pledge. National averages are assumed across users for age of machine, average power management settings, and proportion of desktop vs. laptops.

"Total Carbon Offset" is arrived at by multiplying the above energy savings by the national averages of the amount of carbon that is produced as a result of generating that amount of energy, thereby representing the savings in carbon emissions.

"Dollars Saved" is arrived at by multiplying the above energy savings by the national averages of electricity costs to end-users, thereby representing the total dollar savings to individuals and organizations resulting from the pledge.

Climate Savers Computing is collaborating with the US Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program to reduce power consumption and get people involved in the fight against climate change. The assumptions and specific calculation factors, such as the amount of electricity saved by enabling power management features or ENERGY STAR machines, the amount of carbon resulting from the creation of a Kilowatt of electricity, and the national averages of laptop/desktop users and electricity costs are all based upon the EPA's standards, resulting from recent studies.
